Mwe Inducts Wetland Tittle Cancellation Task Force
Today, the Ministry of Water and Environment(MWE)through the Wetlands Management Department(WMD)held an induction workshop for the technical wetland tittle cancellation task-force. During the workshop which was held at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, the team was taken through various wetland management issues and tools. The Assistant Commissioner Ms Lucy Iyango presented the status of Wetlands Management in Uganda and mentioned that, considerable progress and achievements have been registered in wetland management and utilization over the past 30years: for instance promotion of knowledge on Environment and Natural resources,Restoration & protection of the degraded Ecosystems (demarcated over 231.7 of the 320 km and restored 226.6 ha of the 320 ha among others. Not withstanding the fact that WMD still faces numerous challenges like delayed finalisation of the wetlands bill given the fact that the existing legal framework is weak, minimum transparence in the EIA processes resulting into continued approval of projects in wetlands, impunity and open resistance by some illegal wetland users among others. In her closing remarks, Ms Lucy Iyango urged members to ensure that they work with the local leadership because they are key for the success of the sensitization exercise and the wetland restoration process as a whole.
