Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Services Department

The Ministry of Water and Environment through its Urban Water Supply and Sewerage  Services Department is currently undertaking a number of projects to increase the service coverage in the urban areas. Annex 2 shows the various activities currently being undertaken in the 170 towns as highlighted in the 2016 NRM Election Manifesto.

 Water and Sanitation Development Facilities (WSDFs) are a de-concentrated structure of the Ministry of Water and environment under the Urban Water and Sewerage Department, Directorate of Water Development. Four Water and Sanitation Development Facility branches were established in the regions of South-Western (WSDF-SW), Northern WSDF-N), Eastern (WSDF-E) and Central (WSDF-C).

Uganda Government secured financing from the International Development Association (The World Bank) to implement the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP). The proposed Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP) is a follow on from the Water Management and Development Project (WMDP) and will be implemented by Ministry of Water and Environment, Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Department (Small Towns and Rural Growth Centres) together with National Water & Sewerage Corporation (large towns).

Completed Projects (2019)-Urban Water - Final Draft

The Ministry of Water and Environment through the Urban Water and Sewerage Departments takes mandate to construct piped water supply and sewerage systems in the large towns, small towns and rural growth centers in Uganda.  During the year 2019, The mandate is implemented through the 4No. WSDFs of Central, South Western, Eastern and Northern. It is also implemented through LV Watsan, WMDP, ERT and Support to small towns. The summarized table indicated the piped water supply and sanitation systems constructed and completed during the 2019.

Uganda Government has requested funds from the World Bank for implementing the Uganda Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP). The IWMDP was developed under the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) as an integrated water resource management and development project with objectives of improving integrated water resources planning, management and development; and access to water and sanitation services in priority urban areas and rural growth centers.
