Yumbe Secondary School has been commissioned under Lot A of the Yumbe Cluster, one of four schools benefiting from the European Union-funded Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (EU-WASH) Project in Yumbe District.
The commissioning ceremony held on 22nd September 2026 at Yumbe Secondary School brought together senior government officials of MWE, Ministry of Education & Sports and development partners such as EU, KfW, UNICEF, Enabel and district leaders.
The facility was commissioned by Ms. Karolina Hedström, the Head of Cooperation of the European Union to Uganda, together with Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE).
Dr. Eng. Felix Twinomucunguzi, Assistant Commissioner, Sewerage Services Division, represented Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi at the ceremony.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Water and Environment, Dr. Twinomucunguzi said the project demonstrates Government's commitment to improving sanitation and learning environments in schools, particularly for girls.
Ms. Karolina Hedström reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to supporting Uganda to achieve inclusive and equitable quality education through improved WASH infrastructure. She noted that 199 schools across Northern Uganda will benefit from the program.
The EU-WASH project under the Gender for Development Uganda (G4DU) program is about dignity, health and retention of children in school," she said.
Mr. Birungi Musa who represented Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education and Sports said the new facilities will help reduce classroom congestion and improve student hygiene.
The CAO Yumbe DLG on behalf of Yumbe District leadership thanked Government and partners including European Union, KfW Enable and UNICEF for prioritizing Yumbe, a refugee-hosting district out of the many Districts in Uganda.
Project background
The project in Yumbe Lot A covers four schools. Yumbe Secondary School is the first to be completed and commissioned. Works in the other three schools ; KuruP/S ,Kuru S/S and Aringa S/S are still on-going in final stages and will be commissioned upon completion.
Facilities at Yumbe Secondary include 3 classrooms in firm soil, 4-stance latrine for boys, and 2-stance Latrine for girls.
The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Water and Sanitation Development Facility-North (WSDF-North) on behalf of KfW. CES Consulting Engineers Salzgitter is the international management consultant, while M/S NoveltyConsult and Engineering Ltd is the contractor supervised by Aster Integral Private Ltd.
