Mbale, 27 October 2026 - The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), in collaboration with the World Bank and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), has assessed progress on key water infrastructure and catchment management interventions in Eastern Uganda under the Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP).

On the second day of the Implementation Support Mission inspected the Namatala Water Supply Works in Mbale, covering the water intake, treatment plant and transmission infrastructure, as well as catchment management interventions in Lwakhakha.

The technical assessments focused on project implementation progress, environmental and social safeguards, concerns affecting Project Affected Persons (PAPs), and measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of investments.

The field engagements followed Day One visits to NWSC wastewater stabilisation ponds and sanitation facilities at Doko, Namatala and IUIU, alongside Manafwa Water Works.

On 28 October 2026, the mission is scheduled to visit the Tirinyi–Kibuku–Kadama–Budaka Water Supply and Sanitation System to assess service connections and operational performance before proceeding to the Bukizibu–Bumwena Water Supply System in Mayuge District.

The field inspections form part of the wider IWMDP Implementation Support Mission, running from 26 October to 10 November 2026, aimed at reviewing implementation progress, identifying challenges and agreeing on priority actions to improve project performance and sustainability.

Financed through a World Bank loan to the Government of Uganda, IWMDP seeks to expand access to safe water and sanitation services, strengthen integrated water resources management, and improve the operational performance of water service providers.
