The Ministry of Water and Environment through its Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department has officially handed over a modern sanitation facility to the administration and pupils of Akorikeya Primary School in Amudat District. The handover was officiated by Eng. David Bateganya Project Coordinator and Ms. Martha Naigaga, Sanitation Coordinator, alongside Amudat District leadership who were led by the Deputy RDC of Mr. Etsot Gabriel. The project is jointly funded by the Government of Uganda and India Exim Bank.
The newly commissioned infrastructure features two water-borne toilet blocks - dedicated for boys and girls - equipped with shower rooms, full plumbing, sanitary fittings, and complete foul water disposal through a septic tank and soak pit system.
Addressing the stakeholders, Eng. David Bateganya shared that with proper care and maintenance, the infrastructure will serve the school for decades to come, eliminating the need to construct new facilities across the premises. He noted that the contractor remains on board during the 365-day Defects Liability Period to attend to any technical defects.
Highlighting the practical benefits of the infrastructure, Ms. Martha Naigaga shared with school staff and pupils how the facility will significantly ease mostly challenges girls face during their menstrual period, as it provides dedicated shower rooms and safe incinerator/waste insulation units that dispose of used pads safely without harming the environment.
The Mr. Etsot Gabriel commended the Government of Uganda for bringing this modern technology to the school and district, emphasizing that local leaders and school staff must play an active role in ensuring its proper use and long-term sustainability.
