MANDATE

The mandate of the Wetlands Management Department is to promote the conservation of Uganda’s wetlands in order to sustain their ecological and socio-economic functions for the present and future well-being of the people.

FUNCTION

1. Implement, monitor and enforce compliance with policy, laws and guidelines
2. Initiate, formulate and review wetland policies and legislations for the management and conservation of wetlands
3. Develop and disseminate wetland resource wise-use guidelines
4. Undertake research, assessment and inventory of wetlands in the country to inform decision making
5. Develop and implement wetland management plans to promote wise use
6. Restore degraded wetlands and protect intact wetlands
7. Demarcate wetland boundaries
8. Coordinate implementation of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands in the country
9. Coordinate the implementation of wetland management interventions
10. Build capacity of stakeholders in wetland management

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT HEAD

Mr. Okurut David, Commissioner for Wetlands Management and Acting Director of Environmental Affairs at Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment, has over 20 years’ experience in environmental management, having served in senior roles in government, USAID, and district administrations. He is pursuing a PhD in Climate Change and Sustainable Development and holds multiple qualifications in natural resources, agriculture, management, and law.
