Uganda and Egypt Forge Alliance for Water Security and Development
In a significant move to bolster bilateral cooperation in water resources management, the ministries responsible for water affairs in Egypt and Uganda are on the cusp of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This agreement aims to create a robust framework for technical collaboration, capacity-building, and knowledge exchange in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and development.
The forthcoming MoU outlines key activities designed to enhance Uganda’s water infrastructure and expertise, particularly in remote regions.
These initiatives include the construction of five surface water reservoirs, each with a substantial capacity of 20,000 cubic meters.
Additionally, the project will see the upgrade of 53 high-yielding wells to solar-powered mini-piped systems, promising sustainable and efficient water access.
Furthermore, up to 50 new production wells are slated for drilling, significantly expanding water availability.
A crucial element of the collaboration is strengthening the capacity of Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) staff through targeted short-term training programmes.
As a vital preparatory step towards formalizing this vital partnership, the Ministry of Water and Environment hosted a Joint Experts’ Meeting today, July 24, 2025, at their offices in Luzira, Kampala. The Commissioner for Water Resources Management in the Ministry of Water and Environment for Uganda Dr. Callist Tindimugaya chaired the meeting.
Today’s high-level meeting focused on developing a comprehensive action plan, agreeing on crucial institutional arrangements, and expediting the MoU signing process.
This collaborative effort underscores a shared commitment to ensuring dependable water supplies and fostering sustainable water management practices in Uganda.
