On 15th October, Mbale District joined the world in commemorating Global Handwashing Day on October 15, 2025. The event highlighted the importance of hand hygiene in promoting public health. Under the theme “Be a Handwashing Hero,” the celebrations empowered individuals to take simple, life-saving action by washing their hands with soap.

The celebrations were organized by the Ministry of Water and Environment through its Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, together with other WASH partners. The Ministry team was headed by Eng. Olweny Lamu, Acting Commissioner, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, who represented the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi.

The event featured a march to create awareness, exhibitions, handwashing demonstrations, and technical panel sessions. The sessions focused on strengthening WASH governance and service delivery in urban settings, as well as the role of youth and schools in promoting hand hygiene.

Hon. Silas Aogon, MP Kumi District, presided over the function, emphasizing the critical role of handwashing in disease prevention.
