Design Presentation for Nkanka and Rubuguri Water Supply & Sanitation Systems
The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), through the Water and Sanitation Development Facility-South West (WSDF-SW), convened a design presentation meeting for the above mentioned water supply systems (WSSS) yesterday, 24th September 2025, at the Kisoro DLG headquarters. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to review and discuss the technical design of this critical infrastructure project, which is aimed at enhancing water supply and sanitation services across 10 sub counties i.e. Muramba, Nyakinama, Nyarusiza, Nyarubuye, Nyakabande, Chahi, Nyundo, Kanaba Nyabwishenya and Kirundo and 5 town councils i.e. Rubuguri, Nkuringo, Bunagana, Rukundo and Chyanika in Kisoro District.
The systems are designed to provide a sustainable source of clean and safe water to communities encompassing 46 parishes/town councils and 336 villages. They will harness water from Nkanka Spring (Nkanka WSSS), Lake Mutanda & Lake Mulehe (Rubuguri WSSS) with an operational horizon of 20 years. This initiative is anticipated to have a transformative impact on public health, and overall socioeconomic development by reducing the reliance on unsafe water sources and curbing waterborne diseases.
The technical design of the project includes strategically positioned sanitation facilities, comprising:
- public waterborne toilets
- VIP latrines
The presentation was attended by representatives from District leadership (CAO, LC 5 Chairperson, RDC), Local Councils Representative, the WSDF-SW technical team, representatives of KAGGA Partners Ltd (Design Consultant), and community members from the different sub counties, who highlighted that the provision of clean and healthy water is not only a cornerstone of public health improvement but also a catalyst for socioeconomic advancement in the region. Technical experts elaborated on the engineering details, environmental safeguards, and long-term maintenance protocols, emphasizing a commitment to operational sustainability.
