The Groundwater for Advancing Resilience (G4DR) Project in Uganda was officially launched at the Ministry Headquarters in Luzira.

The launch was officiated by the Commissioner Water Resources Planning and Regulation Department; Dr. Callist Tindimugaya who represented the Permanent Secretary; Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi.

The project aims to enhance water security and resilience in Africa by unlocking the potential of sustainable groundwater development and management.

The project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by FAO is being executed by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA),
and the participating countries of Benin, Togo, Malawi, Mozambique and Uganda.

In Uganda, the project will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Water and Environment and IIASA. Activities will focus on the Upper Nile Water Management Zone (UNWMZ), one of the country’s most critical groundwater hotspots due to population growth, refugee settlements, and high poverty levels.

The Project activities will strengthen groundwater monitoring for data capture, and integrate sustainable groundwater utilization into catchment planning through modeling, diagnostic assessment, participatory processes, capacity building activities and strategic planning.
