National Tree Planting Day( NTPD) in Jinja at Busoga College Mwiri
The Ministry of Water and Environment( MWE) through the Forest Sector Support Department ( FSSD) together with the ROOTs Partners have celebrated the National Tree Planting Day( NTPD) in Jinja at Busoga College Mwiri.
The ROOTs Campaign that was launched in 2019 aims at having 40million trees per year with every Ugandan planting one tree annually, fostering a collaborative and inclusive approach to reforestation, restoration and forest conservation.
This years’ theme” Revive, Restore, Sustain: Indigenous species for Uganda’s Future “ represents a notable achievement in the ongoing national effort to inspire Ugandans to actively engage in rehabilitating degraded landscapes and safe guarding existing tree cover with strong emphasis on preserving and restoring the rich diversity of the country’s indigenous tree species.
While speaking at this event, the Permanent Secretary of MWE Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi who officiated this celebration and represented the Prime Minister of the Government of Uganda and the Hon. Minister of Water and Environment stated that the ROOTs 2025 edition is not just merely about planting trees but is about building ecological and economic resilience.
The event was graced and attended by Partners and Stakeholders from the Private sector, Civil Society Organizations, District authorities, Education Sector and Development Partners who included;
Total Energies, Absa Bank, Stanbic bank, Equity bank, NEMA, Finn Church Aid, Environmental Alert, Climate Action Uganda, One Acre Fund, UNDP, FAO, LCv Jinja district, Mwiri Old Boys Association, Jinja Secondary School, Iganga Secondary School, Wanyange Girls high school, Hope Community high school and 1m Trees planting Initiative Uganda among others.
